7:25 am: Cool conditions continue with a slight decrease in surf early. The waves are looking to be in the 1.5 to 2.5 foot range, with okay conditions. There’s a slight drift to the South early, with our local winds currently blowing out of the NW @ about 8 knots. Our marine forecast is calling for NE winds later on this afternoon. On the local buoy offshore our current wave heigh reading is 3.6 feet @ 9 seconds, down from yesterday’s readings of 5.9 feet at 10 seconds. 11:30 am:   New mid morning photos are up box #2 and you can see we have still have some sizable waves left for your Saturday.   Yes it’s smaller overall than it has been, but still plenty of swell.   The wind has clocked onshore so it’s somewhat choppy.  Finally sunny at the beach.   The water temperature is quite cold now, estimated at 52 degrees as we head into Saturday afternoon…

The bad news… Dean is calling for the cold to linger into the weekend with St. Auggie surf temps bottoming out in the low 50’sF. The good news… winter swell that peaked in size mid-week will linger and improve in quality with lighter wind before gradually diminishing. Also, much warmer (near seasonal norm) weather will arrive next week. See the Surf Station Surf Forecast for the details.

Here is a good link to track near-shore wave height/period/direction and water temperature (dipped into the upper 40’sF this weekend!) just off the NE Florida coast: the Fernandina Beach buoy. Located upstream (to the north) and closer to the coast than the St. Augustine buoy, it’s a good indicator of fluctuations in NE Florida surf conditions influenced by winter cold fronts.
