Surf Reports comments:

7:25 am: Still very cold early on this Thursday morning. Waves size easily @ 3-4 feet. The wind is sideshore N to NW @ 14-16 mph early. Our marine forecast is calling for N winds today . On the local buoy offshore our current wave heigh reading is 7.5 feet at 13 seconds changed from yesterdays 8.2 feet at between 6 and 11 seconds. You can see the ocean live by viewing The Surf Station Cam Page here.

8:00 am: Early morning photos are up box #1 and you can see the north in the swell and that the swell still has size. Some easily chest high waves. The wind is waffling between NW and N and when it’s more NW it’s cleaner with some opening up tubes. The forecast is more N though, so that could cross it up. We will see. Overall lighter wind this morning, which is good news.

12:35 pm: New late morning photos are up box #2 and you can see size in the swell, and that is is not too messy. Not as windy and the result is the swell is straightening up. Not clean just yet, but way less blown out and the form is improving. Looks like fun waves, just still very cold at the beach…

The bad news… Dean is calling for the cold to linger into the weekend. The good news… sizeable winter swell peaks mid-week, then improves in quality leading into the weekend as it lingers then gradually diminishes. Also, much warmer (near-normal) weather on the way next week. See the Surf Station Surf Forecast for the details.

Here is a good link to track near-shore wave height/period/direction and water temperature just off the NE Florida coast: the Fernandina Beach buoy. Located upstream (to the north) and closer to the coast than the St. Augustine buoy, it’s a good indicator of fluctuations in NE Florida surf conditions influenced by winter cold fronts.
