Surf Reports comments:

7:10 am: Increasing NE wind today. Choppy surf early with wave size @ 1-2 feet and on the increase. The marine forecast calls for increase NE wind to shift SE tomorrow. Our local buoy offshore is currently reading 3.9 feet at 4 seconds changed slightly from yesterday’s 3.9 feet at 6 seconds. You can see the ocean live by viewing The Surf Station Cam Page here.

7:40 am: Early morning photos are up box #1 and you can see we have choppy waves. The surf is on the increase for sure as the wave height measurements on the buoys offshore increase. Look for choppy surf all day…

8:50 am: Note from Dean– looking at upstream buoys off the Carolina coast, it’s blowing like stink (gusting to 30 kts) from the N/NE at Station # 41004 a little over 40 miles southeast of Charleston SC, and the NE wind swell has doubled in size (approaching 7′) since midnight. So, look for a significant increase during the afternoon into the evening…

3:00 pm: New mid morning & afternoon photos are up box #2 with the first 5 from 10th Street this morning and the remaining 7 from this afternoon at The Pier. It’s choppy and increasing with waves around 1.5 to 2.5 feet and once again on the increase as the wind comes up, kicking up the surf. It’s super choppy and seems to be getting choppier….

After a crazy warm first half of February with small waves, we are in for a roller coaster ride of changing weather/ wind and swells the rest of the month. See Dean’s latest 7-Day Surf Station Surf Forecast for the details.

Here is a good link to track near-shore wave height/period/direction just off the NE Florida coast: the Fernandina Beach buoy. Located upstream (to the north) and closer to the coast than the St. Augustine buoy, it’s a good indicator of fluctuations in NE Florida surf size and water temperatures influenced by winter cold fronts. Here is an overview of a large-scale, real-time wind map to track the shifting winds associated with the fronts and lows that produce our waves.
