Surf Reports comments:

7:30 am: Small surf this morning. Waves look about 1/2 a foot to 1 foot and mushy. It’s semi-glassy to semi-choppy this morning with the wind light onshore SE early. The marine forecast is calling for stronger SE winds today. On the local buoy the early wave height measurement is 2.3 feet at 5 seconds, up from yesterdays 1.3 feet at 9 seconds, You can see the ocean live by viewing The Surf Station Cam Page here.

8:15 am: Early morning photos taken before, during, and after sunrise are up box #1 and you can see the waves are starting out real small. Changes will begin happening today as a cold front is approaching. Strong winds may kick up the swell, we will see. At report time the waves are only looking about shin to knee high……..

11:45 am: It’s getting busy down on the sand with spring breakers! The waves are looking to be pretty mushy and small with waves in the 1 to maybe 2 foot range. There’s a bit more texture than early this morning with our local winds coming out of the SSE @ about 15 to 20 knots. Those side shore winds are adding a bit of chop but nothing too extreme. We just had a high tide pass at 11 this morning and a low tide approaching just after 5 this evening. Overall, it’s looking pretty small and weak but it’s not flat if you wanted to get out there today.

The latest 7-Day Surf Station Surf Forecast calls for a “suck-up” E/SE swell next weekend ahead of another cold front. After what may be one of the last strong cold fronts clears the slate on Monday, Dean is monitoring a potential swell centered around the middle of next week, compliments of a pair of lows “dancing” Fujiwhara effect in the open Atlantic southeast of Bermuda. Stay tuned for updates.

Here is a good link to track near-shore wave height/period/direction just off the NE Florida coast: the Fernandina Beach buoy. Located upstream (to the north) and closer to the coast than the St. Augustine buoy, it’s a good indicator of the up/down fluctuations in NE Florida surf size and water temperatures influenced by late winter cold fronts. Here is an overview of a large-scale, real-time wind map to track the shifting winds associated with the fronts and lows that produce our waves.
