The BBC has an article on how Filipino villagers Edwin Nomoro and friends would watch the filming of Apocalypse Now in the 70s. They had never seen surfing before and after the crew left behind a few surfboards, Nomoro and friends taught themselves how to ride the waves.
“Once they got the hang of it, the boys started teaching others, and as word spread, tourists began coming to the little town to learn to ride the waves at Charlie’s Point, as it became known.”
