What’s Kelly riding?

Well as most of you know, the WCT has started back up again. I watch it like most of you watch football.. with beers on my couch! (in front of a laptop) And of course I read every surf nerd blog to see what the guys are riding down unda’.. This is what I found out about Kelly’s quiver.. pretty dang neat. He was riding the second board from the left the other day when he murdered his competition..

Kelly's Gold Coast quiver

From Left to Right.

6-0 183/8 2 1/4 Tangent with a concave deck , rp tail , print on cloth art work done By Rosie Young 5 fin option (quad or tri). Old faithful , if there is size and you dont want to go to a step up I could see this board being an option.

5-10 185/8 21/8 eps foam, concave deck Whip swallow tail (but glass shop put a flyer logo on it). He test rode this board as a tri a few days ago at Rincon and his words were, “If I could only take one board to the Gold Coast for the Snapper event it would probably be this one, it feels really good!” He has won the contest on a Whip before , a great board for the different sections snapper offers.

These next two are very similar to what Kelly rode at pipe this year when he placed 2nd and in Mexico when filming the Quiksilver slow mo Cypher vids with Dane and Julian . It’s a 5-6 18 5/8+ 2 5/16 reworked Flyer , bat tail quad , tri option , also with a concave deck but this is a single stringer version , not the dual stringer like he had last year. This board is very fast , a section maker for sure.

His classic 5-4 Wizard Sleeve 19 2 1/4 , rp tail , also a tri or quad option . If its a bit punchy and you want to get off more turns in a smaller area , this could be the board to ride.

Gettin’ techy with Gabe

Gabe Kling is back in town and he’s ordering some Merricks! I helped him for a little bit the other day on what he might want based on a magic Proton he got last year from CI.. His magic stick was.. 6′1″x 11 1/4″x 18 3/8″x 14 1/4″x 2 1/4″ squashtail with FCS Fusion Proton model. So based off of that, we made four boards… as follows..
* We copied the magic one..
* 6′1″x 18 1/2″x 2 1/4″ Fort Knox squashtail
* 6′0″x 18 1/2″x 2 1/4″ Rookie rounded squashtail
* 5′7″x 19 1/8″x 2 1/4″ Dumpster Diver fat squash
Look for Gabe around the world to be killing it on these things in a few months! PS- Gabe is 5′11″ and 175 lbs. for reference.

Ross Howatt and I had a great time down there. Surfing everywhere from Jobos down to Rincon (got that Rincon vibe bra!) and everywhere in between. We never got it epic but wearing trunks and getting sunburnt surfing head high waves was an awesome release from this terrible winter. I predominantly was riding a 5′10″x 18 1/8″x 2 1/8″ Rookie that pretty much covered everything we were riding. Worked so well in everything from waist to chest high Rincon to way overhead Surfer’s Beach. Ross was killing it on his “Bushpig”.. a 5′10″x 18 1/4″x 2 1/8″ chunky Proton. We had back up boards but we never really needed them.. had a great time and can’t wait to go somewhere else warm!
