Preseason Madness

Posted by: cullen

Last night marked the Jaguars season opening game and it got awesome. Awesome as in a 2 hour lightning delay to an evening game that fans have been highly anticipating. Overall, it was great time with some great people as the lightning passed and the game was called on. Section 245 held it down through the rain til the end. Even though we lost the game by one, the Jaguars pride was at an all time high as celebrated the new season with solid night at The Ritz. GO JAGS!!

NY Weekend

Posted by: cullen

Had a last minute call to travel to New York and work a few days in the tri-state. Hustled through some work and met some old and new friends on the ferry out on Governors Island for a free Phantogram and Caribou show. It was pretty insane as they ripped through two sets with lower manhattan looming across the river.
The next day we took trains out to Long Island and met up with John “Iceman” West and Chris “Tunes” Tomlin to beat the heat with an afternoon surf consisting of 70 degree waist high wedges. I knew I was soon in for it when tales of the Drift Inn began to stir after we got out of the water. Sure enough, the place wahzzes out and a cab is dropping us off with the sun coming up. Revenge was set and “Iceman” took the brunt of it getting iced after a quick nap. Overall, it was a great weekend. Thanks to Bert and Bethany for good times.

Nica-randoms

Posted by: cullen

Here are some randoms I was able to snap off my phone after my “real” camera took a dive on day 2 of my trip to Nicaragua. Overall, it was a great trip with no shortage of warm hospitality, Flora De CaƱa, and humbling beatings when the heavy offshore winds pressed you back on the late take offs. Thanks to Lance and Kristen and the rest of the crew at Surfari Charters for making the trip unforgettable. Enjoy!

Rodeo de Nicaragua

Posted by: cullen

I have always wanted to go to a rodeo. I had always pictured big bulls rattling their starting cages, as an experienced rider sets up for the intended 8 second ride… bell rings, and it’s on.

We’ll apparently, that’s not always the case. Sunday proved to be too small to surf only to be further beat down by the relentless 30 – 40 mph lake Nicaragua offshore winds. Fortunately, some friends pointed us down to the local rodeo for some entertaining bull riding and overall cultural experience.

We paid up the 10 cordobas ($0.50), grabbed a few cold ones, and set up along the rickety chain link fence. As the staring gate opened up, the crowd jumped, and rooted for the locals brave enough to hop on these bulls with no protection.

Overall, it was a great experience. If you ever have the chance to go, I recommend checking one out. If there’s only a chain link fence between you and an angry bull… even better!

Ride On

I’ve been wanting to do a motorcycle skate trip for some time now. Over the course of time, you tend to meet like minded people and you share your ideas likes. A few months ago, I was talking to my friend Ryan about motorcycles and trips he’d been on. One conversation lead to another and the dates were picked to set out on our own adventure to ride and skate the various back roads and infamous skate parks across North Florida. With a couple calls, we locked in a couple more friends down for the cause.

Day 1, we met at Skatepark of Tampa, shortly greeted one another, and got on it to High Springs, FL. After a great couple hours riding, we set up camp in Ginnie Springs. A quick swim in the springs, we were refreshed and ready to skate. We rode 20 miles into Gainesville to skate the indoor park. if you’re there, check it out.

Day 2, we tore through backroads with minimal traffic and headed to Jacksonville to skate the Monument park to only be greeted by 15 kids nearly colliding with each other every run. Bikes roared in, and the crash coarse subsided to let in some old man grinds and Aaron’s ridiculous nose blunt up the hubba ledge. From there we headed to Faver Dykes state park to set up camp and relax before a night mission to Treaty Park. An hour later, the lights shut off and it was time to get the fire going and share a few brews and laughs.

Day 3, we woke up to be greeted by the park ranger, thinking were in trouble for having beers sitting around the campsite, but only to find that he was a true bike enthusiast. We headed to Daytona Park and came upon it empty. By this point, our bodies felt worn, but we pushed through it and managed to get ol legs working for one last skate before the dreaded ride back across Florida. Aaron’s bike wasn’t running complete, so opted for back roads. Aaron was also running a sporty tank on a four cylinder bike, which only gave him a range of 65-70 miles per stretch. What happens when there are long stretches without a gas station in site? Pull your gas line and help a brother out in hopes there is one around the corner. Long story short, we made it back safe and sound. Thanks to all the rad diners and friends we met along the way. I’m looking forward to the next ride this Fall.

It’s been cold out there, so I’ve started to look to other ways to stay busy until the weathers back on our side. I’ll post some updates as it comes together.

Those who are familiar with skateboard photography or the Miami skate scene for the past decade know of Ian O Conner and his ability to capture and translate beautiful moments in skateboarding. Based out of Miami, Ian has played a big role in putting the magic city on display through various skateboard magazines, especially transworld.

Here are some photos from Ian’s book release party hosted at AE district January 9th, 2010.

Here are some photos from Thursday when I dropped by Plus Skate Shop’s private TF over at their online warehouse. Pretty fun, but wore out quickly as I was the only one skating.
