MODEL DESCRIPTION
Our board designs are direct results of team feedback, so when Dane showed up at the factory requesting a short wide epoxy with single concave and a huge square tail to make the summer bearable, the Dumpster Diver was born. When he came back a week later and wanted one with a narrower nose and a Rookie tail template for the Trestles contest in 3 days, the 2nd Generation Dumpster Diver was created.
Using the front half of our Sashimi model, and the template for the back half of our Rookie short board, this second version version remained under his feet all the way through to his first final at the WCT Trestles 2009.
Though still a work in progress the Dumpster Diver flies and still has enough kick in the tail to carve in the pocket. If you want to try the board as it was in the Trestles contest, then get one quick, as you never know where he will take the design next.
Feedback: Short, wide and ugly, but fun and fast.
Designed For: Small to medium surf, launching. Intermediate to expert.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
Imagine riding a wave without a surfboard under your feet, exploring parts of the wave that the length of a normal surfboard usually prohibits… For this, Kelly created the wizard sleeve, possibly the closest thing to surfing without a board. If you are ready for the volume of your standard short board hidden in a board that is 6-8 inches shorter, then maybe you are ready for this board. The vee bottom on the Wizard Sleeve allows for smooth rail to rail transitions while the wider nose area in the entry of the board definitely helps increase planing speed over flat sections .As well its narrow tail defines it from a fishy board and gives it more control.
This board is offered in the following sizes: 5‘4, 5‘6 5‘8 and 5’10, and comes standard with a bump round pin tail, which not only smoothes out your style but suits quick direction changes perfectly.
This board is standard with 5 sets of FCS plugs which provides versatility and can be ridden as either a tri or quad-fin. Included in the price are Kelly’s signature performance core fins, an $85 value.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
In landlocked neighborhoods a man’s “whip” is his customized ride, his prized mode of transportation. Kelly’s prized “Whips” for less than perfect surf during his 9th World Title run were his 5’10” x 18 5/8” and 5’8” x 18 7/8" x 2 5/16” swallow tails. Evident by Kelly’s phenomenal start with wins at both Snapper and Bells, this design came alive and skated over the flat spots. This is Kelly and Al’s re-worked version of the Flyer, with a few secret changes this board is faster and more forgiving. If you’re looking for a board that excels when your shortboard seems to bog, this is the board for you.
Feedback : should be ridden 3-4 inches smaller than your shortboard, 1/4" wider and the same thickness.
Designed For everyday use by intermediate to expert surfers in knee to head high surf.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
The
Tangent is the board design that Kelly consistently relied on to get the job done during his 9th world title run with wins in solid surf at Fiji, J-Bay, and Trestles. It consists of single concave and comes with the popular and versatile squash tail or Kelly’s preferred round pin tail. During the quest for a ninth world title, Kelly and Al basically went off on “a tangent” when it came to board design. They tried many formulas which involved one single constant, the rocker. They manipulated countless variables in design: vee bottoms, concaves, shrinking down the size and widening the board up, changing tail temps, fin angles, and fin clusters all depending on the wave to be surfed.
Feedback : to change things up for small waves we also suggest ordering the Tangent 2” shorter and 1/4” to 1/2” wider than your standard shorty.
Designed Foreveryday use by intermediate to expert surfers in waist to well overhead surf.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
The Rookie shortboard development started under the feet of Jordy Smith, and within a month the Rookie was a favorite among CI’s top team riders. This board’s performance paved the way for memorable photo sessions and standout contest results. Like the Proton for Dane, the Rookie is designed around state-ofthe- art surfing by a powerful surfer and has a full rail with a curvy outline. Lower entry rocker and more tail flip out the back than the MBM+ and Proton, the Rookie is powered by single concave throughout.
Key note: remember this board hides a lot of volume so order 1/8” thinner and 1” possibly shorter.
Feedback : a great all around shortboard from the flat walls of Bells to the round beach breaks of France.
Designed For intermediate to expert surfers for waist to double over head surf.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
The Fort Knox is the redesigned T-Knox model. Taylor describes this board as “the fastest board I have ever ridden”. The Fort Knox allows the surfer to hold a rail for a long time and do long arcing turns. This board is flat under your front foot, has straighter rocker out the back, and set within the vee are dual concaves. This keeps the water pressed between the fins, giving it an enormous amount of thrust out of turns. Think Taylor, think Fort Knox.
Feedback : an incredibly fast and drivey all around shortboard.
Designed For intermediate to expert surfers in waist high to double overhead waves.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
Rob Machado hasn’t forgotten how important a high performance shortboard is to his quiver. The 2009 Machado model is a very fast and forgiving shortboard. Robs taken the favorite characteristics of his short boards over the last several years and had Al combine them to create the 2009 Machado Model. Be on the look out for clips of Rob in Taylor Steeles last release as well as Robs upcoming movie Drifting.
Feedback : though Rob is extremely light on his feet, this board can be ridden by all surfers no matter how light or heavy footed.
Designed For waist high to double over head. For the novice to advanced surfing levels.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
From the mind of Machado comes the Robber, another addition to our fun short/wide boards that fly. Full and flat in front, thin and narrow in the tail. The tail is a winged swallow with spiral vee out the back. The board comes standard with hand laid Twin Finner Future Fins but also works well as a thruster. This design was originally ridden in the movie Sprout.
Feedback : should be ridden 4-6 inches shorter than your standard shortboard.
Designed For novice to expert surfers in knee high to three feet overhead.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
Our new traditional fish design developed exclusively with Joe Curren. The Even Keel comes standard with double foil wood keel fins and 6+6/4 layups that achieve ideal swing weight and momentum through turns. Joe’s board of choice over 50% of the time at home or on the road.
“With The Even Keel my goal is to make a board that is both progressive and traditional by taking my favorite elements from the original fish-speed, drive, trim and glide-and adding design elements that improve rail-to-rail transitions and increases maneuverability. A person is said to be ‘on an even keel’ when steady and well-balanced in life as a well-trimmed ship is in the water. This board is my Even Keel” - Joe Curren
Feedback : this board is incredibly fast and finds hidden pockets of speed on waves that elude your short board.
Designed For novice to expert surfers in knee high to 2 feet overhead.
MODEL DESCRIPTION
The MBM+ is an updated version the MBM. Working closely with team riders, Al modified the bottom contours to create the MBM +. All our team riders that were riding the MBM are now riding the MBM+ and achieving great results. Nathaniel Curran recently rode the MBM+ to victory at the US Open and the Lacanau Pro in route to qualifying for the 2009 WCT. It consists of a single concave bottom with flip in the tail. The MBM+ is an integral part of CI team riders’ equipment.
Feedback : needs to be surfed vertically in the pocket.
Designed For intermediate to expert surfers in waist high to well overhead waves. Can also be custom ordered as a quad or a Step-up board.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
This is the first release from our Skunkworks research and development program. Not to be confused with graphite rail boards you’ve seen on the market, the Double Helix offers a unique three dimensional helliptical rail wrap. During the designing and testing process we found that completely enclosing the rail in a secret blend of micro-synthetic fibers added strength and gave the board a fast and springy feel. Stringerless construction, epoxy layup and a special blend of polyurethane foam, these boards are a true extension of your feet.
FLYERThe Flyer is our top selling shortboard, and for 2009 we offer it in the new Double Helix tech. With increased performance and consistency being the ultimate goal, we now bring you three sizes, 5-10, 6-0 and 6-4. The Helix is a polyurethane core not EPS(the only PU core perimeter flex board on the market). The Helix rails are removed and encased in a special weave and then put in a glass press. When flexed, an increased amount of recoil provides the rider with an incredible amount of spring out of turns. This board is still hand finished in the USA and guaranteed to bring a new sense of life into your surfing.
PROTONThe Dane Reynolds Proton model is also offered in Double Helix tech (see flyer/helix characteristics), at 6’ 1 1/2” x 18 5/8” x 2 1/4”. This is an exact replica of Dane’s favorite Proton, but with the new flex pattern the Helix brings you. If you loved the lively feeling the single concave bottom the Proton offered you before, now take it to the next level with the only polyurethane core perimeter flex board on the market.

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
TUFLITES are produced by first matching a pre-tested design, then cloning that proven board again and again so the surfer purchasing it knows it’s going to perform. The second aspect of performance is weight. A lighter, stiffer board is more responsive. This allows quicker direction changes and tighter positioning on the wave.”
STRUCTURAL DURABILITY:
A board with structural durability does not mean it’s undingable or unbreakable. It is a board engineered not to fall apart under your feet while surfing. The deck is designed not to crush or delaminate from general surfing. The body of the board is tough enough to take those little thumps here and there without opening holes.

ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGY
Channel Islands offers a number of its high Performance models available in XTR technology. XTR is extruded polystyrene (a closed cell styrofoam Blank), this means it does not absorb water even if dinged. Glassed with epoxy resin, using a new patented technology which releases built up gas thus reducing delamination. Al has been testing his designs in this technology for five years and the result is an extremely high performance surfboard, providing a very lively feel and riding slightly more buoyant than a standard polyurethane board.
